Dealing with a dog pooping in the house is not pleasant, even for those with a strong stomach!
To steal from the well loved character of Winnie the Pooh – do you currently feel like you live in The House On Poo Corner?
Do you have to gingerly make your way down the stairs and carefully scan the carpet for unwanted presents (those swirly patterns are the worst for spotting them).
Maybe you have given up walking around barefoot for fear of that telltale soft feeling between the toes, or the dampness underneath your foot.
It’s not as if you are dealing with a puppy – which is forgivable, after all we put nappies on babies for a reason. Or with an elderly dog who is maybe getting a little incontinent.
So why is it that when you get up in the morning, or return home from work or shopping, do you find yourself having to deal with dog poops. It can feel like you’re wading through it – ok, maybe not wading, but have you ever done that tiptoe, bow-legged walk to avoid it?
Techniques That Won’t Stop Your Dogs Pooping
Some dog owners face this scenario on a regular basis, and it seems that no amount of “magic” sprays or rubbing their noses in it works.
Shouting at you dog may initially make you feel better, but this approach can backfire and actually make your dog more likely to do it again!
I imagine you would much rather arrive in your house like those strange people on adverts for air fresheners who insist on breathing in deeply as soon as they step inside, smiling and deciding that you are indeed someone they should be friends with (or more if you are bringing a date home…).
So why does this happen? What is actually going on in the dog’s mind for it to seem to be compelled to cover the house in its …. (feel free to insert whichever word you use normally).
Once again, let’s get back to Nature.
Why Your Dogs Pooping Habits Are Simply The Call Of Nature
Scent marking the territory is done by the leaders of the pack predominantly, with two functions in mind. One – to warn potential intruders that they live here, and Two – to give their own pack members a beacon so they know where to find home.
Remember, dogs use their sense of smell far more than we humans do. You may find that the most common place that your dog poops is at a main door to the house, because that is where you leave and the outside world comes in.
So a dog pooping in the house is a way of both throwing down the gauntlet to others and making sure that your “doggie GPS” knows where Home is.
This is a brilliant system in Nature, but in our world it is not appreciated.
You may be putting your dogs pooping down to bad dog behaviour, but there is more likely to be a reason behind it.
Of course, it could be doing it for the attention, but did you know that dog pooping in the house is a really common symptom of separation anxiety in dogs? Also if your dog believes it is leader of the pack and is responsible for you too, this can make the situation worse.
