Destructive dog behaviour – whether it be dogs chewing your favourite shoes, a dog scratching at the doorway or even destroying your best furniture – is not only an expensive problem, but also the sign of a dog with a big problem.
I have met many people who have asked for my help because the destructive dog behaviour was getting out of hand, yet when told how much the consultation would be, responded by saying it was too much as they were buying a new sofa.
I know what you’re thinking – why not get the problem sorted first, then buy the sofa? But some folk get stuck in a downward spiral and can’t see it… Of course, if they set aside their plans to buy the sofa, and live with the current one (why not put a throw on it temporarily… I may have seen too many home make-over shows!), they could deal with what is driving the destructive behaviour in their dogs.
For those who claim that dog boredom is the cause (and there are still so many people who will insist on humanising animals), let me clarify that animals who do not know the next time they are going to eat (all of them except some people) find it much more difficult to get bored. If you have ever watched one of those “reality” shows (a friend of mine in New Zealand used to work for a TV company making these shows and he told me they are all staged) where they don’t feed the contestants for a while? Nobody ever talks of being bored. All they talk about is… you guessed it, food.
A dogs chewing is entirely natural and releases a natural endorphin into the system that calms it down during times of stress (watch Sir Alex Ferguson when his football team Man. Utd are struggling…)
The stress for a dog comes from separation anxiety and separation anxiety comes about as a result of a dog frantically worrying about its family for which it believes it is responsible.
If your dogs destructive behaviour means you walk in angry, of course the dog will run away, but not because it knows it has done something wrong. As a man (here we go) I know the best immediate course of action when a loved one comes home mad is to run for the hills until they calm down. That’s why pubs were invented…
